Medical Devices: The Intersection of Software Engineering, Electronic Advancement and Medical Sciences
Saturday, January 20, 2007
Software (signal processing and imaging) and electronics engineering (including sensors and transducers) allow increasingly sophisticated medical devices. The intersection of software engineering, electronics engineering and medical science provides exciting opportunities for entrepreneurs. The barriers to entry are relatively low, compared to biotech and pharmaceuticals. The capital investment is fairly modest, not requiring highly specialized equipment and supplies. In addition, many software engineers and electronics engineers have the skills to work in the medical device field. Meanwhile, academic medical centers and research institutes contribute regularly to the development and introduction of medical device technology, and can provide a ready source of potential products. The time to market of a medical device is typically substantially shorter than biotech and pharmaceuticals.
This medical device program will focus specifically on the integration of software and electronics in medical device applications, examining the opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Michael E. Phelps Norton Simon Professor and Chair UCLA Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology
Dr. Michael E. Phelps is the original inventor of PET (Positron Emission Tomography). Now a vital tool in advanced healthcare, PET is a molecular imaging technique that provides in vivo images of biological processes, blood flow, metabolism, cell communication systems, drug interactions and gene expression. Dr. Phelps will discuss the current and future prospects of the integration of software engineering, electronics engineering, and medical science. He will describe various aspects of the relationships that exist between academic medicine, clinicians, and entrepreneurs in inventing, developing and marketing medical devices. He will point to areas that he believes will be most fruitful for entrepreneurs to explore.
Dr. Phelps has been on the faculty of the University of California since 1976. He is actively engaged in medical research, educational programs and multimedia technologies at UCLA, where he uniquely holds six academic positions. In addition to serving as the Departmental Chairman and holding an endowed professorship, he is also the Director of the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, Professor of Biomathematics, and the Director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine and the Chief of Nuclear Medicine.
